2029 World Athletics Championships: London Bid

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The United Kingdom (UK) government has confirmed that it is supporting a London bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, which, if successful, would be held at the London Stadium, which last hosted the event in 2017.

The government is also supporting a bid for the World Para Athletics Championships in 2029, stating that they are "committed to taking [it] beyond the capital with a host city to be confirmed in due course".

Around £10 million (around €11.5 million) of public funding is expected to come from the London Mayor's office, with £35 million (around €40.3 million) from the government.

The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, stated:

"Bringing the World Athletics Championships to the UK would be a moment of great national pride, building on our global reputation for hosting memorable sporting events that showcase the very best talent.”

And he added:

"The event would provide a boost for UK businesses and support jobs as well as bring our communities together."

The London bid is expected to be successful and would, it is claimed, boost the UK economy by £400 million (around €461.3 million).
