THE COURT OF ARBITRATION FOR SPORT (CAS) UPHOLDS APPEAL BY INTERNATIONAL TENNIS INTEGRITY AGENCY (ITIA) AGAINST TARA MOORE
Lausanne, 15 July 2025 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled on two appeals involving the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) and tennis player Tara Moore (UK) concerning an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV). Ms Moore is sanctioned with a 4-year period of ineligibility, starting from 15 July 2025, with credit for any provisional suspension that has already been served.
On 13 January 2023, Ms Moore was charged by the ITIA with an ADRV from a sample collected during the Copa Colsanitas tournament in Bogotá, Colombia, in April 2022, due to the presence of boldenone and nandrolone.
The matter was deferred to an Independent Tribunal constituted in accordance with the Tennis Antidoping Programme. Ms Moore argued that an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for nandrolone should not have been reported, and that the presence of boldenone and nandrolone in her sample must have been caused by the consumption of beef and/or pork in Colombia, where the tournament was held. The Tribunal issued a decision on 22 December 2023 that Ms Moore bore no fault or negligence.
On 12 January 2024, the ITIA filed an appeal with CAS to establish that Ms Moore committed an ADRV and to sanction her with a four-year period of ineligibility. Ms Moore filed an Answer and a Cross Appeal on 11 June 2024, seeking to dismiss the ITIA appeal, dismiss the nandrolone result in the ADRV or alternatively confirm that she bears no fault or negligence. The appeals were conducted together. Procedural extensions were requested by both Parties and a virtual hearing was scheduled on 13 and 14 March 2025.
After reviewing the scientific and legal evidence, the majority of the CAS Panel considered that the Player did not succeed in proving that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat. The Panel concluded that Ms Moore failed to establish that the ADRV was not intentional. The appeal by the ITIA is therefore upheld and the decision rendered by the Independent Tribunal is set aside. The cross-appeal filed by Ms Moore was declared inadmissible.
