It has been announced by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) that the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is the showcase tennis court of the US Open Tennis Championships (US Open), is to be expanded as part of a US $800 million (around €710.6 million) renovation project at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York City, United States.
The USTA has described the proposed expansion as “the largest single investment in US Open history."
As a result of this expansion, the capacity of the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which currently holds 23,771 spectators, will be increased by around 2,000 spectators. It is already the largest tennis stadium in the world.
The USTA intends to fund the renovation project itself, with work to be done in phases between tournaments, in order to minimise disruption. Completion is expected by 2027.
The USTA CEO and Executive Director, Lew Sherr, stated that:
"This project enables us to maintain the greatest stage in tennis - Arthur Ashe Stadium - which was constructed more than 25 years ago and modernise it in a way that will set it up for the next 25 years."
