Paris Olympics: Algerian Woman Boxer Files Legal Complaint!
By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw
The Algerian woman boxer, who won gold in her weight category at the Paris Olympics and at the centre of a furore, especially online, concerning her gender identity and her right to compete as a woman, has filed a legal complaint.
According to her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, Imane Khelif, who is twenty-five years old, has submitted a complaint to a special unit in the Paris Prosecutor’s Office alleging “aggravated cyber-harassment” against her.
Boudi described the attacks against his client as a “misogynist, racist and sexual campaign” against the boxer.
It is now up to the French Authorities to decide whether to open an investigation into the matter to determine whether to bring proceedings before the Court.
It is reported that J K Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, and Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, are amongst others, named in the complaint, regarding their online remarks concerning the boxer. If the matter does, in fact, go to Court, they may stand trial!
It is also reported that Donald Trump, who tweeted in upper case letters on the ‘Truth Social’ platform that “I will keep men out of women’s sports”, will also be part of the investigation.
It will be recalled that Khelif was disqualified from competition for allegedly failing a gender eligibility test by the International Boxing Association, which has been expelled from the Olympic Movement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for alleged financial and corruption matters, but was allowed by the IOC to compete in the Paris Games.
