OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 WEIGHTLIFTING

THE CAS AD HOC DIVISION DISMISSES THE APPLICATION FILED BY DAVID SÁNCHEZ LÓPEZ (ESP)

Paris, 8 August 2024 - The Sole Arbitrator appointed to decide the application filed by the Spanish weightlifter David Sánchez López (the Applicant) at the CAS Ad hoc Division in Paris contesting the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Independent Member Federation Sanctioning Panel (IMFSP) decision dated 22 July 2024 (the Challenged Decision) has dismissed the application.

The Applicant considered that the Challenged Decision in which a financial sanction was imposed on the Turkish Weightlifting Federation (TWF) after three of its athletes were found guilty of doping offences to be contrary to the IWF Anti-Doping Rules meaning that the TWF and all of its athletes should have been sanctioned and banned from participating in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 (the Games), thus implying the Applicant’s own qualification, attendance and participation in the Games.

The Sole Arbitrator, Ms Kristen Thorsness OLY (USA), held a hearing on 5 August 2024 at the Tribunal de Paris. The Sole Arbitrator’s decision to dismiss the application was communicated to the parties on 6 August 2024. The full award with grounds for the Sole Arbitrator’s decision is published on the CAS website.
