OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 FOOTBALL

THE CAS AD HOC DIVISION REJECTS THE APPLICATION FILED BY MARTA VIEIRA DA SILVA, THE BRAZILIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE AND THE BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION

Paris, 6 August 2024 - The CAS Ad hoc Division for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games received an application in the afternoon of 5 August 2024 filed by Brazilian player Marta Vieira da Silva (Marta), the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Brazilian Football Confederation (the Applicants) against the decision issued by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on 2 August 2024 (the Challenged Decision) in which Marta was sanctioned with a two-match suspension after being sent-off for serious foul play during the match between Brazil and Spain on 31 July 2024 at the women’s Olympic football tournament.

The Applicants sought the annulment of the Challenged Decision and a new decision establishing that the Player serve only a one-match suspension (already served in the match of 3 August 2024 against the French team) and authorising her to participate in Brazil’s next match against Spain (semi-final) on 6 August 2024 at 21:00 (CEST).
The Sole Arbitrator appointed to decide the application, Ms Laila El Shentenawi (EGY), held a hearing with the parties by video-conference this morning. In view of the urgency, she issued her decision this afternoon, rejecting the Application.

The full award with grounds will be issued to the parties in due course.
