Sport and Climate Change

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

A Survey by World Athletics has revealed that 75% of athletes have been directly affected by climate change.

85% of athletes stated that sport in general is suffering due to the climate crisis.

In fact, World Athletics had to reschedule its events during the World Championships held in Budapest last summer due to extreme heat.

The President of World Athletics, Lord Sebastian Coe, stated that:

Our athletes continue to speak clearly about the impacts that the climate crisis is having on their lives and on their sport.”

And added that:

It’s important for us to continue to act on those concerns and use the influence we have to help drive meaningful change.”

In fact, World Athletics will implement, in 2025, a scheme to improve sustainability at its events.

As for the Paris Summer Olympics, according to a new Report - “Rings of Fire: Heat Risks at the 2024 Paris Olympics” - could be the hottest games on record!
