UK: Water Sports Alliance formed and demands unpolluted waters!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

Seven water-based sports have formed an alliance to demand the UK Government to “go further and faster” in tackling water pollution.

The sports include British Rowing, British Triathlon and Swim England.

This follows the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race in which the Oxford’s men crew became sick from E Coli as a result of high levels of raw sewage in the River Thames.

The Alliance, which represents 450,000 members, athletes, and participants, has set out a three-part strategy to improve water quality.

A Statement from the Alliance remarked that:

Pollution from various sources contaminates UK inland and coastal waters, damaging ecosystems and causing illness within people who take part in sport and physical activity in, on or around these waters.”

And, according to a survey conducted by ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ of popular swimming and water sports locations, 60% of them were found to have unsafe levels of pollution!
