Football: Crowd Trouble at West Brom Wolves Game

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The so-called ‘English Disease’ (football hooliganism) has reared its ugly head again, or, perhaps, has never really gone away!

The FA Cup match, on 28 January 2024, between West Bromwich Albion (West Brom) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) was suspended for 38 minutes due to crowd disturbance.

Missiles were thrown, fights broke out and fans spilled on to the pitch. Six people – four West Brom and two Wolves’ supporters - were arrested.

Of those arrested, one was suspected of brandishing a corner flag as a weapon and another suspected of throwing punches at police officers.

One man was taken to hospital with head injuries.

A spokesperson for West Brom stated that the Club condemned the incident “in the strongest terms.”

And added that the Club would work with the police and the FA to investigate and that anyone found to be involved in the incident would receive a Club ban.

During the 2022-2023 season, there were 2,264 football-related arrests!
