Football: Jurgen Klopp

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The announcement, on 26 January 2024, that the Manager of Liverpool FC, Jurgen Klopp, has decided to leave Anfield at the end of the current season has sent shock waves around the football world and beyond.

His retirement has even prompted a leading article next day in ‘The Times’ of London, in which it is claimed that he has done more to improve Anglo-German relations than any of his countrymen since Marshal Blucher at the Battle of Waterloo!

In other newspaper tributes, his leadership has been praised and hailed in ‘The Financial Times’ of London as a model for other leaders, particularly political ones, to follow.

Klopp, currently the longest-serving English Premier League Manager, stated that he had “no regrets but a lot of special memories.”

Billy Hogan, the Club’s Chief Executive, remarked:

When he joined us, he talked about leaving the club in a better place than where he found it.”

And added:

And if you look at that then there’s no doubt he’s done that.”

A fitting tribute indeed!
