‘First Lady of Boxing’ Retires

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The Norwegian boxer, Cecilia Braekhus, who is 44 years old, has ended her brilliant boxing career on a high by beating her opponent the Slovenian boxer, Ema Kozin, who is 26 years old, on points and claiming the WBC and WBO light-middleweight titles.

The bout took place in Lillestrom, and the judges scored her 97-93, 96-94 and 98-92.

The 'First Lady' of boxing fell to her knees, when hearing the scores, and remarked:

"I want to thank the boxing community all over the world, my friends in England, LA, everyone.”

And added:

I'm so happy.”

In 2014, she became the first female boxer to hold all four major titles, at the same time, and retires with a record of 39 wins, two defeats and one draw

She was also accredited with overturning the 33-year Norwegian ban on professional boxing, on safety grounds, in 2014.

Her achievements are yet another example of women’s success in sport!
