The England team are working with police after defender Jess Carter, who is 27 years old, disclosed that she had been the target of racist abuse during the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament.
Carter stated that, from the start of the tournament, she had experienced a lot of racial abuse and that she would be stepping back from social media.
The team also announced, on 20 July 2025, that they are discontinuing the anti-racism gesture of taking a knee before matches as it was "clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism".
The England Football Association stated that they are "working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice".
UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, stated that:
"There is no place for racism in football or anywhere in society.”
We would echo that statement!
