Women’s Sport: Record Revenues!

Women’s Sport: Record Revenues!

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

According to the Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, world-wide revenue generated by elite women's sport is expected to exceed £1.88 billion (around €2.23 billion) this year.

This is very much in line with the increasing appeal of women’s sport, including amongst male sport’s fans, around the world.

Perhaps surprisingly, basketball at 44% is expected to overtake association football at 35% as the top revenue-generating sport.

Commercial income, which includes sponsorships, partnerships, merchandising sales and pre-season tour income, is expected to represent the largest share of revenue across women's sport at 54%, with broadcast revenue at 25% and matchday revenue at 21%.

Jennifer Haskel of Deloitte’s stated that:

"The growth of women's sport has continued to exceed expectations as various competitions, leagues, clubs and athletes generate significant returns, despite limited resources.”

In support of this, Haskel cited the importance of major tournaments, such as the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, to be held in the UK, and the Women's Euro 2025, to be held in Switzerland.

And added that:

"The commercial appeal of women's sport and its athletes has never been higher, as the sector continues to shine on the global stage.”
