Football: TV Blackout

By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw

The rules that stop English football matches, which start at 15 00 on Saturdays, and most of them do so, from being shown on television have been described by Prince William, a Patron of the English Football Association, as “irritating”.

A keen fan of Aston Villa FC, he added that:

But it’s really annoying that we still can’t watch our own team’s Premier League match in this country, but you can go abroad and watch any game any time.”

The TV blackout rules also apply to English Football League matches.

The rules were introduced in the 1960s to encourage fans to attend lower League matches.

Is it now time to abolish this anomaly in the digital age?
