In connection with the Football Regulation Bill in the UK Parliament, a call has been made to the Government to address the apparent bias against black managers.
The call has come from Delroy Corinaldi, the co-founder of the Black Footballers Partnership.
According to this organisation, although 43% of the players in the English Premier League are black, only 4.4% of management positions are held by black ex-players. In executive, leadership and ownership positions only 1.6% of them are held by blacks.
Corinaldi characterised black players as becoming “a lost generation” after their playing careers came to an end.
Of course, whilst he may well have a valid point, supported by statistics, any kind of ‘positive discrimination’ in favour of blacks runs the risk of creating a state of mediocrity rather than one of meritocracy, if not handled properly!
